I signed High Marq on as an early pilot participant, and by mid-2016 we had our first camera up and running in the larger of our district\u2019s two school forest properties, known as Hungry Hills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.wisconservation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Hungry-Hills-Owl_resize.jpg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;M2E57L168 167R399B390&#8243; align_tablet=&#8221;center&#8221; align_phone=&#8221;&#8221; align_last_edited=&#8221;on|desktop&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.2&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.2&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;||23px|||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||7px|||&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span color=\"#999999\" style=\"color: #999999;\"><i>Photo of an owl taken in Hungry Hills<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.2&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;-11px|||||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||21px|||&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of student volunteers and a bit of trial and error in selecting an appropriate location for our camera, we\u2019ve been monitoring the forest ever since. Our camera at Hungry Hills has captured plenty of deer, of course, but also red foxes, coyotes, opossums, raccoons, turkeys, owls, waterfowl, and rabbits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve also spotted fishers at our school forest, observations that contributed to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.snapshotwisconsin.org\/2017\/08\/15\/science-update-fisher-distribution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extension of the fisher\u2019s known range in our state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When I inquired about this with the Snapshot Wisconsin staff, they were enthusiastically on board. Happily, our school forests are in different survey blocks in Marquette County and no one else had placed a camera in the Muirland block. Participation in the Snapshot Wisconsin program has given our students a new way to connect with these spaces and learn about what goes on in them when humans aren\u2019t in the way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve been able to observe that the greater plant and landscape\u00a0 diversity at Hungry Hills as compared to Muirland is reflected in the greater animal diversity captured on our cameras. (Both sites are primarily pine plantations, but Hungry Hills has more wild spaces.)
