Funds raised through the Great Wisconsin Birdathon are distributed annually through the Natural Resources Foundation\u2019s<\/strong> Bird Protection Fund<\/a>. The Bird Protection Fund supports the highest priority conservation needs for Wisconsin\u2019s birds throughout their lifecycle \u2013 from their breeding grounds in Wisconsin to their migratory habitat in Central and South America. Since its inception in 2009, the Bird Protection Fund has granted out over $1 million for bird conservation!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kirtland\u2019s Warbler Conservation<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Recipient: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”]The <\/span>Kirtland\u2019s Warbler is one of<\/span><\/b> Wisconsin\u2019s rarest wildlife species<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>This songbird has been found nesting in Wisconsin since 2008, and thanks to conservation successes, it was <\/span>recently delisted from the federal Endangered Species Act. <\/span><\/b>However, as a conservation-reliant species that depends on ongoing management for its specific habitat requirements, efforts are still needed to ensure the long-term viability of the current population<\/span> <\/span>while working to expand its range<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Piping Plover <\/span><\/b>Recovery<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/span><\/i>Recipient: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

Wisconsin is home to <\/span>important breeding <\/span><\/b>grounds for the federally endangered Piping Plover<\/span><\/b> on the Great Lakes shores<\/span>. <\/span><\/b>Wisconsin is also home to<\/span> a <\/span>rich history of conservation<\/span> <\/span>through management, monitoring, and collaboration with federal, tribal, and state partners. Thanks to conservation efforts, <\/span>Wisconsin\u2019s Piping Plover population has continued to grow<\/span><\/b>, with recent successes including 10 nesting pairs documented in 2019. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Reintroduction of Migratory Whooping Cranes in Eastern North America<\/span><\/b>
<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n

Recipient: International Crane Foundation<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whooping Cranes are one of the<\/span><\/b>\u00a0most threatened bird species in North America<\/span><\/b>, and the rarest crane species in the world. From a low of just 20 birds in 1941, Whooping Cranes are slowly coming back from the brink of extinction.\u00a0<\/span>The International Crane Foundation\u00a0<\/span>is a leader in helping to establish a second migratory population of Whooping Cranes which breed in Wisconsin and migrate to the Gulf Coast over\u00a0<\/span>the winter. In 2020, a total of\u00a0<\/span>21 breeding pairs were documented in Wisconsin<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as the focus remains on increasing the population to a self-sustaining wild flock.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Funding<\/span>\u00a0will support reintroduction efforts including\u00a0<\/span>captive breeding and rearing of chicks using costume<\/span>–<\/span>rearing and parent-rearing methods, specialized veterinary care, and research\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>and monitoring of reintroduced Whooping Cranes<\/span>\u00a0in Wisconsin.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Advancing Bird Conservation within Wisconsin\u2019s Important Bird Area System<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n

Recipient: Wisconsin Bird Conservation Partnership <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

Important Bird Areas <\/span><\/b>(IBAs) <\/span><\/b>are sites that provide essential habitat for birds<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>including species that are threatened, endangered, or vulnerable<\/span>. <\/span>With the support from the Bird Protection Fund, last year the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Partnership began the first stage of their comprehensive IBA <\/span>a<\/span>ssessment to determine which of <\/span>Wisconsin\u2019s <\/span>93 IBAs<\/span><\/a> hold the <\/span>greatest potential for long-term bird conservation<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Neighborhood Habitat Improvement Project Pilot<\/span><\/b> 
\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n

Recipient: Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

Pairing a behavior change campaign with scientific research<\/span><\/b>, the Neighborhood Habitat Improvement Project is a new initiative that aims to <\/span>empower residents to improve habitat <\/span><\/b>within<\/span><\/b> their own yards.<\/span><\/b> <\/span>The goals of the project are to <\/span>improve habitat for bird and other wildlife<\/span>, improve scientific understanding of how urbanization affects birds, and nurture and promote a community of <\/span>engaged<\/span>, motivated, and knowledgeable citizen scientists. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Neotropical Flyways Project<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Recipient: Cornell Lab of Ornithology and SELVA<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

More than one billion birds migrate between North America and the <\/span><\/b>N<\/span><\/b>eotropics each year<\/span><\/b> – yet despite this massive movement of birds<\/span> <\/span>the routes and strategies that these birds use is almost completely unknown. By identifying critical stopover sites and habitats in the <\/span>N<\/span>eotropics,<\/span> the Neotropical Flyways Project helps to <\/span>fill one of the largest gaps in our knowledge of the full life cycle of migratory birds<\/span><\/b>, while promoting conservation efforts to protect these vital resources for the future. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Breeding Bird Atlas II<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

Recipient: Wisconsin Society for Ornithology<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>The <\/span>Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas is a pioneer undertaking,<\/span><\/b> as one of the largest citizen science projects in the state\u2019s history, and as the very first Atlas in the world to be recorded entirely on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\u2019s digital database, <\/span>eBird<\/span><\/a>. The final result will be a <\/span>state-of-the-art resource <\/span><\/b>that will inform local, state, regional, and national bird conservation efforts.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
