Photo by Jay Watson.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin recently received a $500,000 donation\u00a0that will\u00a0support statewide\u00a0native\u00a0pollinator conservation efforts through the creation of the Wisconsin Pollinator Protection Fund.\u00a0<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{a0b2b179-2727-49f8-ab91-b4f9d86873f0}{219}\" paraid=\"805624477\"><span>\u201cWe decided it was time to support pollinators because they are the unsung heroes of the special ecosystems we enjoy in Wisconsin,\u201d shared the\u00a0donors, who wish to remain anonymous. \u201cWhile they don\u2019t come readily to mind when we think about Wisconsin\u2019s natural areas, these tiny creatures are vital to supporting the habitats that plants and animals depend on.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{a0b2b179-2727-49f8-ab91-b4f9d86873f0}{233}\" paraid=\"1043244281\"><span>Pollinators, including\u00a0bees, butterflies, moths,\u00a0flies,\u00a0beetles,\u00a0and birds,\u00a0carry pollen from flower to flower\u00a0helping many plants produce\u00a0seeds, fruits,\u00a0and vegetables.\u00a0Despite their\u00a0value to the economy and\u00a0the natural world,\u00a0pollinators are in decline in Wisconsin and across the globe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{737d25f3-8ebd-4db7-9638-b202a52a02e4}{24}\" paraid=\"83031479\"><span>Loss of habitat for feeding and nesting, pesticide and herbicide use, invasive species, climate change, and diseases are all contributing factors to their\u00a0decline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{737d25f3-8ebd-4db7-9638-b202a52a02e4}{38}\" paraid=\"233982307\"><span>The federally endangered rusty patched bumble bee, for example, was once a common sight in the Midwest. Photo by Bruce Bartel.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">While some plant species\u00a0can\u00a0fertilize without the aid of pollinators, more than 85% of the world\u2019s flowering plants and two-thirds of the world\u2019s crop species are dependent on pollinators for reproduction.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{737d25f3-8ebd-4db7-9638-b202a52a02e4}{110}\" paraid=\"38583090\"><span>\u201cOne in three mouthfuls of food and drink we consume is dependent on the work of pollinators,\u201d says\u00a0Department of Natural Resources\u00a0conservation biologist Jay Watson. \u201cWisconsin\u00a0crops that rely on pollinators,\u00a0including apples, cherries, green beans, cucumbers, and\u00a0cranberries,\u00a0account\u00a0for over $55 million in annual production.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{737d25f3-8ebd-4db7-9638-b202a52a02e4}{134}\" paraid=\"304184956\"><span>Native pollinators are\u00a0equally important to\u00a0natural communities\u00a0like\u00a0forests, prairies, marshes, sedge meadows, and lake dunes\u00a0that can be found across Wisconsin.\u00a0These communities also include\u00a0Wisconsin\u2019s\u00a0687 designated State Natural Areas\u00a0that are home\u00a0to the majority of\u00a0the state\u2019s\u00a0endangered and threatened species, as well as species of special concern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{737d25f3-8ebd-4db7-9638-b202a52a02e4}{170}\" paraid=\"1920539482\"><span>The Foundation\u2019s Director of Conservation Programs,\u00a0Caitlin\u00a0Williamson,\u00a0worked closely with conservation partners to advise the donors on strategies\u00a0for the fund\u00a0that\u00a0align with\u00a0statewide, regional, and national pollinator recovery plans, including the Wisconsin Pollinator Protection Plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{737d25f3-8ebd-4db7-9638-b202a52a02e4}{200}\" paraid=\"1317649988\"><span>The fund will support habitat creation and enhancement,\u00a0research and monitoring, new staff positions\u00a0for pollinator conservation in Wisconsin, as well as education and outreach efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{737d25f3-8ebd-4db7-9638-b202a52a02e4}{217}\" paraid=\"1876701035\"><span>One key\u00a0strategy\u00a0of the fund\u00a0will be to engage Wisconsin farmers\u00a0in creating pollinator habitat on their agricultural land\u00a0through practices like creating\u00a0prairie strips,\u00a0(small\u00a0areas\u00a0of native\u00a0plants on corn or soybean fields) or\u00a0utilizing\u00a0precision agriculture\u00a0(transforming\u00a0low-yield farmland into pollinator habitat).\u00a0Both\u00a0strategies\u00a0create habitat for wildlife while also benefiting\u00a0farmland\u00a0by reducing\u00a0soil\u00a0erosion and\u00a0improving\u00a0soil and water quality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{d8928d2a-ec3e-4d28-9e8e-631d243327e1}{36}\" paraid=\"161873143\"><span>The Foundation will be seeking additional donations to the fund\u00a0in the upcoming months that\u00a0will be matched \u2013 up to $10,000 \u2013 by the anonymous donors. The Foundation will use these\u00a0donations to create an\u00a0endowment\u00a0that will\u00a0provide permanent\u00a0funding\u00a0for Wisconsin\u2019s\u00a0native\u00a0pollinators.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{d8928d2a-ec3e-4d28-9e8e-631d243327e1}{72}\" paraid=\"2060476918\"><span>\u201cPollinator conservation will take decades of work, and long-term sustainable support,\u201d says Williamson. \u201cBut the great thing about\u00a0pollinators\u00a0is that everyone can get involved, from individuals, to schools, to businesses, to farmers.
